Some tips for you to not only view your fps but to help improve it (allow it to go higher than default)
Go to your PERFORMANCE options in the menu, turn Synch Every Frame OFF, it is on by default (with this turned on, your fps will attempt to match the refresh rate your vid card uses for your monitor)
In game, open your console with "~" and type in the following to show your FPS
/cg_drawfps 1
While in your console, type the following command to allow your fps to go beyond the default max of 60
/com_maxfps 250
(your fps will now be capped at 250, use whatever value you want. This does not mean you will get 250, just that it wont go any higher)
If you have 1GB of ram or more:

you put your fps to 125 to make "125 jumps" it's a quake thing that I have been doing since RTCW days, first you unlock your fps by cg_maxfps 0 wich unlocks your frames then you tyoe this "seta com_maxfps 125". you will be makeing jumps better and jumping farther. Hunkmegs are to be set to half of what you have for RAM
i personaly do this also,snaps 40 and pb_sleep 500

heres some good commands to help regestry and fps
/com_hunkmegs 512 //1 gb of ram or more
*/com_maxfps 125 // if u cant get 333 cap at 125, for higher jumping and better regestration, maxpackets at 63 (1/2 of 125) is good if u get 125 constant
*/com_maxfps 333 // if u can get 333 constant you will regester amazing like me, plus u can walk around in some spots and not be heard :D
/cl_maxpackets 100 // # of packets being sent to server, directly related to fps and regestration
/rate 25000 // helps regestration
/snaps 30 // all good players use this, helps regestration
/cl_packetdup 0-5 // i use 0, because i dont get any red or yellow lines on my lagometer, but if u do use 1 or 2.
/r_picmip 2 // lowers textures for better fps
/seta sex "male/female_#" - yes it helps. enter your gender and a number from 1-10 on your scale of e-sexiness.
/m_pitch .0333 // this is my personal preference, maybe im used to it but i find it lessens recoil, plus its easier to toss nades up quickly while running away.
and to lessen those annoying pb screenshots
/pb_sleep 500 // reduced number of SS sent to server
/pb_security 0 // allows pb to update automatically
/pb_writecfg // saves pb settings *you need to do this to save pb settings(sleeP)*

does this post still apply to cod4?

In regards to the FPS settings....
Some servers have punkbuster set to kick players with high max FPS settings so be careful. I've been kicked from servers where the max was 250. Personally, I don't see how setting you max FPS higher can make you jump higher or move more silently. I could understand that with more frames, you will see the movement more smoothly and so would be able to see the peak of the jump better and movement better. If the max FPS really did affect these aspects of play, I would consider them hacks because of the edge it would give you over someone who did not have it set. To me, that's in the same leauge as the people that turn shadows off uin BF2 and turn up the gamma so that players stick out like a sore thumb (and that is considered a cheat by PB).
Logically speaking, having a max FPS set any higher or much higher than you monitors refresh rate would do nothing. FPS is more of a braggin right saying well my system can crank out X frames per second at Y resoultion, yours can only crank out X FPS. If you monitor is set to 60Hz, your monitor will only display 60 FPS no matter what the game is outputting. This is why you should set the refresh rate as high as you can. Most nice monitors have a max rate to 75Hz, while some of the new real high end ones have a 120Hz refresh rate. However, these monitors are more geared to movie enthusiast as they are usually of the 23" and larger size and setup to do 1080p with HDMI and such. But the technology is moving down. So following logic, if you computer is generating say 100 FPS, and you monitor is set to 75Hz, you are dropping 25 frames each second, or 25% of the frames generated by the computer. Now, taking that thought a bit further, we are telling the game to produce a maximum of 100 frames each second. But if we can never display more than 75, why allow the computer to waste CPU or GPU cycles to produce those frames we are only going to throw out? Logically speaking the max FPS should be set to the refresh rate of the computer.
Now the above is just a logical assumption. As we all know, reality does not always follow logic. The governement is a good example of this. But were not going to get into that at all because the server only has so much capacity, and we dont want to put corrupt data on it ;)...
So, I challenge you guys to prove or disprove that logic. I know that next time I'm on, imma set the max FPS to my refresh rate and see what happens. I will then move it up in incriments of 25 or so and see if gameplay changes at all as it goes up. I'll report back once I have something to support or erode that argument.

That probably does hold true with 2 caveats. One being your minimum FPS. If your FPS drops below the refresh rate in high demand graphic situations, you may see a difference. Those situations might be intense firefights with smoke and arty. Probably just when you do not want a decrease in performance.
The second situation may be if verical syn is turned on and your FPS are at or below your Hz.
So I would guess that if your minimum FPS exceed your Hz and you turn vertical sync off, you may not gain much if anything with FPS greater than your Hz refresh rate. That is if real-world application follows the mechanical logic of the hardware. I'm not versed enough to know if there truely are variables that allow FPS exceeding the hz of the monitor with vertical sync off to actually impact game play. I'll leave that up to you "computer whizes"

Don't use more than 250 on the fps setting. TWL's PB config will kick for anything below 30, or above 250. My above post has been edited.

there is a setting in CoD 4 that is called "sync every frame" that setting makes your video card stay as close to your screen refresh rate as possible. When you have a constant 125 (for making specific jumps) or 250 it makes the game run smoother and in any situation its like what big easy said when its a heavy graphic situation you wont see a difference when your fps drops and you can continue to play without a hiccup.
