All concerned TSH,
Problem 1:
How to disable programs that appear not to have an Option to disable them.
Solution:
After confirming that a program such as an Anti-Virus program, does not have an option to disable it easily; for example, the Cooperate Edition of Norton Anti-Virus has always had the option to disable it by right clicking on its Systray Icon and selecting "Disable". (And in order to quickly re-enable it, right clicking on its Systray Icon and selecting "Enable".) But if your particular Anti-Virus can't be disabled easily, as just described, or from another Option you find in it, you can usually disable the
Service associated with the program. So, in order to disable a Program's Service simply Google "Disable Windows
Service".
Here's my first result for "Disable Windows
Service":

It should translate well from WinXP to Vista and Win7.
Problem 2:
How can I afford to risk disabling my Anti-Virus program?
Solution:
Understand, its not really a risk at all. Just as long as you remember that all the hype about being protected at all times is misconstrued and comes down to one thing: The meaning of being protected at all times should be properly associated with HAVING AN ANIT-VIRUS program installed, with updated Virus definitions, and properly functioning. Because, the odds of preventing infections and cleaning any infections are increased astronomically if you have it installed and working already, compared to attempting to install and or repair AFTER being infected. Its like attempting to immunize an already sick person. Right?
And running Anti-Virus programs all the time is the right thing to do, with the exception of, people trying to obtain the highest performance possible for PC Games, such as BC2. In that case, temporarily disabling your Anti-Virus program is highly recommended, if not an absolute must.
Disabling ALL anti Virus AND Anti Spy-ware is a must when playing games such as BC2.
Also, be sure to disable
Indexing completely for Vista, disable
Indexing at least on the Folder that Game(s) are installed in, for Win7. (Google, "disable Windows
Indexing".) And I believe
Indexing should be completely disabled for WinXP too.
Anti Virus, Anti Spy-ware, and Indexing, all three of them analyze active and even inactive files and as a result compromise how well your games perform.
A good suggestion I always give is, use
ProcessExplorer in order to better see how much individual processes take away from the CPU's available resources.
DL ProcessExplorer Here.
In options found in
ProcessExplorer's drop down Menus, enable "Run only one instance" and "Minamize to Systray". I also suggest making a shortcut to
ProcessExplorer and place that shortcut in the "Startup" folder in your Start Menu, so it runs when ur PC starts.
